Schools and Community
Hat Fair and Community
Hat Fair supports two primary education activities as part of its annual programe; Inside Out Day and Schools' Day. Each offers opportunities for local schools and youth organisations to participate in the arts and to work with professional artists to create visual art, dance, music and theatre for the festival.
Inside Out Day
Inside Out Day is a pioneering project aiming to develop citizenship skills and commerce knowledge through the arts.
Throughout the year, Winchester's young people work with practitioners on a range of issues across one of the following seven areas: Commerce, Religion, Arts, Health, Politics and Government, Law.
Their work is then presented in a procession throughout the city, where children of the city knock on the doors of the buildings and institutions and ask grownups from the world of work to come out onto the street and answer their questions.
Schools' Day
Hat Fair opens its celebrations with Schools' Day - a children's parade featuring many local schools and artists. Schools work with Hat Fair artists to create costumes, music and dance for performance. The procession takes the children through the city to Cathedral Green where the children are then able to watch the first shows of Hat Fair!
Each year Hat Fair works with schools and community organisations to develop a wide range of free educational workshops involving the arts. We are committed to developing arts skills with the city's young people and enabling them to share their experience at the festival.
